How to boost your career in the new year and how to prepare for the job market in 2023?

2022 has been another year of uncertainty and change, so as you look into 2023 now is the perfect time to reflect and set your international career up for its best year yet.

What is the job outlook for 2023? What jobs are trending in 2023? How can you boost your career in 2023?

The United Career Coalition (UCC) did some research and talked to recruiters in development banks, multilateral, bilateral, international, and non-governmental organisations and UN organisations and we are happy to share that our findings show that organisations recruit more than ever!

Read our 5 easy ways to prepare for a successful career in 2023:

1. Shake off 2022
Clean your mind and discard the ideas and conceptions that are holding you back. Think about what is holding you back. Reflect on your previous interviews, conversations and applications identify your lessons learned and look at possible opportunities for the future. Try to address unhelpful habits and negative thoughts and focus your energy on your career goals.

2. Think long term
Have a career strategy for your global career ambitions for 2023. Make sure this strategy allows for time to recharge and reflect. Keep your eye on your career goals, and remember that you need to ensure your health and well-being come along for the ride to make sustained progress.
Having experienced myself how cumbersome and lengthy the U.N. application process can be, a lot of patience and attention to detail when drafting your application document is key.

3. Know your Personal Unique Selling Proposition
Highlight your specific, unique skills and work style. Think about what makes you stand out from everyone else. The U.N. receives approximately 800 job applications for each post through its digital employment portal, Inspira. You want to make sure that in your application your skills and experience stand out!

4. Keep learning

Continuous learning is key. Make yourself familiar with UN initiatives and current challenges. One way to stay abreast of latest developments related to the U.N. family is by simply creating e.g. a google alert on the topic of your interest.

5. Network & Connect
Dedicate some time and focus on effective networking activities. Understand what networking type you are. Having a network of people who are willing to back you and advocate for you is essential plus effective networkers are more likely to be offered opportunities.

We hope the above tips are useful.

We would also like to use this opportunity to announce that, in addition to the Cover Letter guide and, due to high demand, UCCs new Competency Based Interview Guide is now available for download on UCC's website.
This guide delivers advice on preparing for U.N. competency-based interview including: common interview questions; questions which will likely be asked and how to structure your answers; dress code, posture and gesture tips; advice for a strong first impression and many more insights and insider tips.

We wish you a wonderful holiday season & all the very best for your 2023 career ambitions.
