And what are the job levels in UN system? What contract types, appointment types and job grades are in the UN System and its Personnel Policy?

The UN system workforce is not only made up of different categories of staff but of different levels within each category, which reflect increasing levels of responsibilities and requirements

In order to help you decide which UN system staff category and what level is suitable for you, we’ve listed hereunder the different categories of staff at the United Nations system. This will be useful when you start looking and applying for UN jobs.

The UN system differentiates between the following staff categories:

·      Professional and higher categories (P and D roles)

·      General Service and related categories (G, TC, S, PIA, LT)

·      National Professional Officers (NO)

·      Field Service (FS)

·      Senior Appointments (SG, DSG, USG and ASG)

What does P3 mean and what tasks are involved in a professional UN system role?

Professional or P posts for example comprises posts that have key functions related to managerial tasks; for the performance of those tasks those posts require a university degree or equivalent professional experience.

The UN system differentiates between different staff categories; ‘P’ stands for professional role and P1 - P7 which gives you clarity about the years of work experience needed for the vacant UN system role. For a P-3 role for example some posts require a minimum of 5 years of work experience.

What does G4 mean and what tasks are involved in a general UN system role?

General Service or G posts could for example cover tasks such as administrative support, secretaries, clerks, building management, conference or translation and printing services.

Besides the different categories and types, the UN system also differentiates between different types of appointments e.g. temporary or fixed-term contracts.
