How do I apply for a job with the United Nations?
This article aims to share information on the UN application process, including where to find UN job openings, how to create a profile on the UN's career portal, and what documents are required for submission.
We spoke to former and current UN staff and summarized below the 5 best tips and advice on how to apply for a job with the United Nations:
1. Regularly check and explore job opportunities at the United Nations Careers website such as unjobs or uncareers but also the UN system organization site that you with to apply for e.g. unodc-employment.com for job openings that match your skills and interests.
2. Review job descriptions thoroughly to understand the requirements and qualifications as well as e.g. language criteria (!) for each position.
3. Set up a complete and up-to-date profile on the UN Careers Portal, including your education, work experience, skills, and language proficiency, reflecting UN values and competencies needed to carry out the role you apply for.
4. Prepare required application materials, including a cover letter (Personal History Profile or PHP), resume/CV, and any additional documents requested. Doublecheck for spelling and grammar mistakes! And submit your application through the UN Careers Portal or via email, following all instructions provided in the job posting.
5. Regularly monitor your application status through the UN Careers Portal and respond promptly to any requests for additional information or assessments. Once selected for assessments or (panel) interviews, prepare thoroughly by reviewing job requirements, researching the UN organization, its mandate initiatives, and practicing common competency-based interview questions. We recommend practicing mock interviews with a friend or alternatively with a UN expert from the United Career Coalition team.
