What qualifications and experience are required for UN jobs?
What educational background, skills, and work experience is needed to be considered for positions at the United Nations?
Candidates typically need a combination of educational background, language skills, competencies and work experience relevant to the specific role they are applying for. While requirements can vary depending on the position, grade, organization, and level of responsibility, we summarized below some guidelines:
Educational Background: Many positions at the United Nations require a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and some may require advanced degrees such as a master's or doctoral degree; please read the job vacancy to see which degree is required. The field of study may vary depending on the position but commonly includes areas such as international relations/development, political science, economics, law, public administration, social sciences, environmental studies, engineering, or related fields.
The United Nations seeks candidates with a diverse set of skills to meet the complex challenges of its work. Commonly sought skills include:
· Strong written and verbal communication skills in multiple languages, including English and other official UN languages, are often essential.
· Ability to analyze complex information, data, and situations, and to develop insightful recommendations or solutions – analytical skills
· Capacity to work effectively in multicultural teams, build relationships, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders – interpersonal multicultural teamworking skills
· Leadership and management skills – depending on the grade you apply for; usually P3 and above. Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage projects, and coordinate activities effectively.
· Problem-solving skills: are key. Aptitude to identify issues, propose innovative solutions, and make sound decisions under pressure.
· Lastly, don’t forget your transferable and technical skills such as your proficiency in relevant software, tools, or technical areas related to the specific position (e.g., IT, finance, engineering, statistics, etc.).
The level of work experience required varies depending on the position's level and complexity. Common requirements may include work experience in areas such as international development, humanitarian affairs, peacekeeping, diplomacy, policy analysis, project management, research, or related fields.
Experience working in multicultural or international settings, particularly in regions where the UN operates- field experience- can be advantageous.
